Jacob

Which of these two sons will bear the faith of Abraham and Isaac?
In the bible story, Esau the older son cares little for the vital things in life. The younger son will only help his brother if he gains something in return. Obviously, I he tension of the heir continues. With Isaac the tension lay in his birth, while with Jacob and Esau the tension rests in their worthiness.

Jacob outmaneuvers Esau again in chapter 27. Isaac has grown old, and his eyesight has failed (27:1). Isaac sends
Esau to hunt game and cook before the blessing. Rebekah hears the plan, however, dresses Jacob like Esau, and sends the younger son to be blessed. Confused, Isaac blesses Jacob (27:27-29). The promises God made to Abraham and Isaac are transferred to Jacob. Thus, he gains not only Esau’s birthright but his special promises as well. Of course, Esau resents this turn of events. His only comfort comes from planning to kill Jacob (27:41). Jacob’s only recourse is to flee. Rebekah sends him to her brother Laban in Haran, which sounds like a merciful idea at the time (27:43). Ironically, Jacob cannot use the advantages his trickery has gained him.

On the way to Haran, Jacob has a vision of heaven (28:10-22). During this dream God offers him the promises of Abraham and Isaac. Land, offspring, and relationship are again at the heart of the covenant (28:13-15). Rather than accept God’s offer unreservedly, though, Jacob vows to follow the Lord if he can return “safely” to
Canaan (28:20-22). Therefore, Jacob will have his own struggle for faith. In him, then, the search for an heir and the struggle to believe are revived. Still, he is the person God chooses to further the reversal
of Genesis 1-11.

Haran does not prove to be a safe place for Jacob. He does find his uncle Laban, but he soon learns Laban is as treacherous as he himself. Many troubles plague the heel grabber. He falls in love with Laban’s daughter Rachel and works seven years for her. On his wedding night Rachel’s older, and less attractive (29:17), sister, Leah, is
exchanged for Rachel (29:23). The text humorously notes, “When morning came, there was Leah!” Jacob, outraged, asks, “Why have you deceived me?” The trickster has been tricked, and he must work seven more years for Rachel. Obviously, life with Laban is difficult.
After his marriage Jacob begins to father heirs of his own. Even this process causes strife. Leah is not Jacob’s favorite, but she bears sons. Jacob loves Rachel the most, but she is barren. Rachel, therefore,
repeats the custom of giving the handmaid as a surrogate. Leah does the same when she stops having children. Finally, Rachel has a son named Joseph. In all, eleven sons and a daughter are mentioned in the text (29:31-30:24). Certainly, Jacob does not share Abraham’s need for a son. Throughout this time period Rachel and Leah
vie for Jacob’s affections (note 30:14-16). This competition did not lead to domestic peace, and it had long-lasting consequences.

Along with his domestic problems, Jacob has difficulty with Laban, for who he works. The two men squabble over their flocks, and God directs Jacob to flee Laban and head back to Canaan (31:3-21). Jacob has Laban’s daughters, flocks (honestly gotten), and Grand children. When they flee, Rachel steals Laban’s household
gods, which conveyed inheritance rights, so Laban chases them.

Abraham’s Struggle for Faith

Blogroll No Comments »

In the bible story, Though Abram receives fabulous promises in Genesis 12:1-9, he is in no way perfect. His first struggle for faith occurs as he enters the land of promise. Incredibly, famine pervades the land of promise (12:10-20). Abram and Sarai, therefore, go to Egypt. To save himself, Abram poses as Sarai’s brother. They are discovered, but the Lord protected them. Rather than trust God, Abram has attempted to help himself. He is not yet a man of faith.

Abram’s greatest struggle of faith, however, comes as he waits for a son. He proves himself just in dealing with his nephew Lot (Gen.13-14), but no heir arrives. When God next appears to him and repeats
His promises (15:1), Abram complains about this problem (15:2-3). Once more, the Lord reassures Abram of the future (15:4-5), and Abram believes. Here he demonstrates great faith.

Many years pass. In Genesis 12 Abram is seventy-five years old. Genesis 16:16 observes he is eighty-six. Abram and Sarai have begun to doubt they can have children. So they, make use of a common practice.
Sarai’s handmaid, named Hagar, acts as a surrogate mother for her mistress (16:1-2). Hagar bears a son named Ishmael, who becomes the father of the Arab peoples. God loves and protects this child. Still, Abram and Sarai fail the test of faith. They do not fully trust God to give them a child. Is Abram a man of faith? Thirteen more years transpire (17:1). By now the author has introduced great tension into the plot. Is God faithful or not? Can or
should Abram cling to the original promises? Once more God appears to Abram (17:1). This time He will “confirm” his covenant, or agreement, with Abram (17:2). To show this confirmation, the Lord
changes Abram’s name (”exalted father”) to Abraham (”father of many”). This name change means God has increased His blessing.
Abraham will have many descendants, an everlasting covenant, and the land of Canaan as a home (17:7-8).

This episode closes with two important aspects. First, God tells Abraham that Sarai’s name will be changed to Sarah (”princess”). Though very aged, she will have a son. Because Abraham laughs, the
new child’s name will be Isaac, which means “laughter.” Ishmael will not serve as the main heir. God blesses him (17:20), but Isaac is the long-awaited heir who will continue Abraham’s relationship with God (17:21). To show his faith, Abraham obediently circumcises himself, Ishmael, and his male servants (17:27). Thus circumcision
became the initiation rite of Jewish males into the Lord’s covenant.

Isaac’s laughter-filled birth provides a temporary relief in the plot’s tension. Finally, the long-awaited son arrives (21:1-7). Chapters 18-19 prepare the reader for this important event by repeating
the promise of a son to Abraham and Sarah (18:1-15) and eliminating Lot as an heir of faith (18:16-19:38).

Finally, Abraham obeys God and builds an altar, ties his son to it, and prepares to kill Isaac. At the last second—indeed, when his hand is in the air God stops Abraham (22:10-11). The Lord declares, “Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son” (22:12, NIV). Quite clearly, Abraham has become a person
of faith. The ultimate test has been passed. Now the reader knows he is faithful. Surely this type of commitment can lead to the defeat of sin. God does provide a lamb for the sacrifice (22:13), so Abraham’s
earlier statement is vindicated.

Parents Advice on Baby Gift Giving

Blogroll No Comments »

If you are looking for a perfect baby gift and don’t know what to buy, here is some practical baby gift giving advice from a new parent.

First off, begin by knowing that there is no such thing as the perfect gift.  The new parents have already gotten their perfect gift at the birth of their new baby. So you can take all the pressure off yourself of finding something that will shine more than the newborns themselves. What you should know is that almost anything you look for can be a perfect gift if you know what to look for in a gift.

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite, clothing.  There are some do’s and do not’s here that you should be aware of.  First off, clothing is the most common newborn gift given. Most gift givers assume that all babies need clothing, so therefore it is the best most practical gift. And besides that pink dress and matching hat are soooo cute!  While buying clothes may be a cute way to go, buying clothes has some pitfalls as a gift.  You need to know the size of the baby before buying the clothes.  Not all newborns are made for newborn clothing.  We had a 10 lbs baby who was wearing 3 month old clothing by her second week. And because of a babies rapid growth, a really great outfit will only get worn a couple of times before the baby is too big for it.  So my advice here is to buy clothing in advance of a child’s age, buy 6 to 9 month old clothes that will be around when the baby has outgrown all the other gift clothing.  Buy special occasion clothing like holiday and religious occasion clothing.  These clothes are more likely to be seen photographed and remembered.

Baby toys and entertainment centers -  Aunts uncles and grandparents love to compete to see who can buy the biggest loudest and flashiest toys.  In the world of baby gifts, this is the man’s Porsche.  But bigger, better and flashier does not always translate into a great baby gift.  You should consider the amount of space a family will have to keep a large number of these contraptions.  My advice is to see if the parents have a baby registry.  If so, see if they have selected any of these items.  Then check with the other big family players to see if anyone is shopping off the registry.  Swings, bouncy chairs and activity mats can be a parents greatest friend, but if they have too many of them in the house it can be a nightmare.

Client or remote friend gifts-  When buying for a business contact or a distant family member or friend, you may want to consider looking at baby gift baskets. Gift baskets may be the easy grandparent gift at Christmas but they also can be great for babies.  My recommendation is to buy a basket that can be personalized.  This will combine the  usefulness of the items with the memory value of them as well.

Finally, my personal choice for a great gift for newborns is keepsake items.  Things that a child will be able to carry throughout life make the best gifts.  Religious jewelry, memory and keepsake boxes, music boxes, personalized picture frames, birth certificate holders, first tooth holders, and first teddy bear or blanket all make great baby keepsakes.

Best of luck in your baby gift shopping!

Dui Lawyers

Blogroll No Comments »

DUI cases are some of the most frequent criminal cases in today’s society. If you have been charged with a DUI related crime, then you are going to want to hire a DUI lawyer or someone competent and knowledgeable with DUI cases. When looking for a DUI lawyer, there are some things you are going to want to consider before you hire one. In the following article, I will discuss what some of these things are. Please keep in mind, the better your DUI lawyer is the better chances you have of winning your case.

Probably one of the most obvious thing but perhaps the most difficult is figuring out if you can trust the DUI lawyer that you’re talking with. It is important to listen closely to the lawyer. Try to determine if they know what they are talking about. Ask if they have a specialty. If they do and their specialty relates to your case, then obviously that’s a good thing. Another thing to ask is if the lawyer is affiliated with any defense lawyer associations. If they are, this may help to give credibility to the lawyer. Other things to consider include costs and fees. For obvious reasons you will want to find out this information prior to signing anything.

All attorney fees are negotiable so don’t be afraid to negotiate the fees with the DUI lawyer. Again, you will want to make sure you do this prior to signing anything. Whatever amount is decided on, fees are typically paid either up-front or payments are made throughout the length of the trial. Again, this is something you are going to want to find out prior to signing anything. Another very important thing to consider is if the DUI lawyer that you are considering is experienced in the criminal justice system. If they are, they likely have developed a level of respect in the justice system and they may be able to use this respect to your advantage. Of course there are other things you will want to consider but the above things should get you pointed in the right direction.

When it comes down to it, there are no guarantees when it comes to DUI related cases. If you do your research and get a good Dui lawyer, you can significantly increase your chances of winning your case.

The Hamptons Real Estate

The Hamptons Real Estate

With the recent onset of many foreclosures in the real estate market, and the total chaos of the stock market, one might think that the Hamptons Real Estate market would be bearing its own brunt of problems. The Hamptons, however, are as alive and thriving as ever. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that a small collection of wealthy people are paying large premiums in order to have their homes erected in an astoundingly short time. One house, which boasted a 10,000 square foot living area, is expected to be built in 10 months or less. This makes it very evident that the Hamptons Real Estate market is thriving possibly better than it ever has. Whatever problems that the general real estate market seems to be having, is apparently not evident in the Hamptons. Many would-be home owners are finally beginning to realize that the real estate bubble is not going to burst any time soon.
Most buyers in the the Hamptons Real Estate market are laying down more than 40% of the home’s price for a down payment. In fact, some home buyers buy for cash. All the depressing talk about the recent turmoil in the real estate market, the raging foreclosures, the dissolution of mortgage companies, added with the increasingly high interest rates, have set a gloomy perception to many of the current stability of the real estate market. However, home buyers are finally figuring out that the real estate market is not going to burst. After all, it hasn’t yet, and it probably never will.
The biggest question in the minds of people checking out the Hamptons Real Estate market is whether or not the market will hit bottom. In the second or third quarter of 2008, it is expected to be below that of 2007, and median prices by the end of 2007 are expected to fall by 2%. This will, indeed, fuel the onset of people who are looking to purchase their haven in the Hamptons.
Even with the pricing of homes in the Hamptons, many are still looking to get into the community, and pay the dues of living in this upscale area. The average price of a home is well over $1Million, and while that may seem extravagant to the rest of the country, it is at the bottom end of the price listing in the Hamptons. You know what they say, “As the rich get richer, the richer buy a home in the Hamptons.”

Hamptons Real Estate

Hamptons Real Estate

For the largest part of a century, Hamptons real estate has been a popular market for the rich and famous from near and far. The wonderful sandy beaches and country roads serve as a haven for rich and richer who are willing to pay large parts of their fortunes for homes in the prestigious Hamptons.
With the onslaught of the housing turmoil, and the booming foreclosures in practically every section of the country, you might think that the real estate market in the Hamptons would have suffered. That simply is not the case. More and more blue bloods are willing to lay down their large chunks of change for homes of phenomenal size and value, just for a chance to call this area home. Even with the problems in the real estate world this past year, the Hamptons, as well as a large part of Manhattan, did not falter in the market. It stands to reason that if the economy in Manhattan and New York City are doing well, then the high end market will do just as well. The high end market would definitely include the Hamptons real estate sector.
Even the rental market is thriving, as prices have jumped significantly on rental homes. Many of the elite choose to rent their summer home, and some of these homes rent for upwards of $200,000 for a 4,500 square foot home. There are some of the more extravagant homes that will bring in $750,000, but these are the exceptional homes, and are few. Of course, when rental prices climb that high, it makes much more sense to buy a home than to rent, and there are many people who are opting to buy their home in the Hamptons. Even with the general real estate problems, the Hamptons have been as crowded as ever.
What better way to spend your fortune than to invest in Hamptons real estate? After all, you must spend all that money somewhere, and there just really are not a lot of places to lay down over a million dollars at once. Retiring baby boomers are becoming a very popular group of homeowners as well. What better place to retire than in an upscale and quiet area of the country?
